Editorial Committee

NewCAJE’s The Jewish Educator is overseen by the following editorial committee:

Dorice Horenstein, Co-Chair
Dorice Horenstein is the Education Director at Congregation Shaarie Torah where she has been for the last 16 years teaching and educating children and adults. Dorice grew up in Israel and served in the Israeli military. Dorice enthusiasm and love of Israel and Judaism is infectious and evident to all when she conducts classes.

Sherry Knazan, Co-Chair
Sherry Knazan has been a Jewish educator for more than 30 years. She is currently teaching in a supplementary school, consulting for an adult education program, and slowly but joyously making her way through a doctoral program in Jewish Studies.

Arnold Binderman, Committee Member
Arnold Binderman is a retired Periodontist living in Sarasota Florida. He has a Masters in Jewish Studies and has been continuing toward a doctorate.

Allison Fowler, Committee Member
Allison went to UC Berkeley and worked in Human Resources Management.  She is currently a stay at home mother who love to read, learn and take classes in Judaism and Torah.  She is currently studying for her bat mitzvah.

Bob Horenstein, Committee Member
Bob Horenstein is the Director of Community Relations for the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland and a regular contributor to the Jerusalem Report Magazine.

Rachel Nelson, Committee Member
Rachel Nelson is the Director of Educational Initiatives and Intergroup Outreach at the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland where she has been for almost five years. She grew up in Portland but has had the opportunity to work in Jewish Education in a variety of settings in LA and New York.

Abi Taylor-Abt, Committee Member
Abi Taylor-Abt has worked in the field of Jewish Primary and Secondary Educational Curriculum Development for over twenty years. Abi is co-author of the Sinai School Hagaddah, author of both the TLC and Jewish Journeys Curricula and has recently published her book Lessons in Jewish Learning.

Originally, from North West London, Abi moved to Israel at the age of 14 and has since spent time living in Israel, South Africa, England and the United States. Abi studied Business, Leadership and Management at Anchor College, Johannesburg and received her teaching credentials while in London.  Abi worked as the Community Programs Director for Congregation Ahavath Beth Israel in Boise, Idaho and recently spent five years back in Israel teaching in her community. This past year, having been awarded the status of Outstanding Educator in the field of the Jewish Curriculum Development, Abi moved to Metro Detroit to be the Director of Yachad School a joint educational venture between the conservative Congregation Beth Shalom and the reform community of Temple Emanu-El.

David Tulin, Committee Member
David Tulin’s involvement in Jewish education and other related areas over more than 3 decades includes being a teacher, principal, & director of the Philadelphia Board of Jewish Education, education director at Camp Ramah in PA, Jewish Teachers Union organizer & president, elected delegate and speaker at the World Zionist Congress, Chair of the Philadelphia Zionist Federation, founder of American Friends of Neve Shalom/Wahat El-Salaam, (Israel’s only Arab-Jewish cooperative village and School for Peace), author of the Anti-Defamation League’s “World of Difference” anti-prejudice faculty guide.  He is founder and president of a national & global diversity and inclusion consulting group for corporations, government agencies, non-profits, universities and public & private schools, and most recently also designs & co-facilitates experiential educational success & protection programs for DACA high school students currently enrolled in Philadelphia high schools.

Julie Schwarzwald, Committee Member
Julie Schwarzwald is the Education and Youth Director and B’nai Mitzvah Instructor at the East Brunswick Jewish Center in New Jersey. A career as an elementary educator in public and day schools, coupled with years of synagogue lay leadership, have joined forces in this relatively new career path. Born and raised in Shaker Heights, Ohio, Julie is astonished to find that she has lived more than half her life in New Jersey.

Beri Schwitzer, Committee Member
A native Las Vegan who didn’t have the aspirations to be a showgirl, Beri Kaplan Schwitzer put her time, energy, and enthusiasm into education. Beri is a nationally recognized Jewish educator honored by Jewish Education Service of North America (JESNA) and the Association of Reform Jewish Educators(ARJE) for her work in creating a special needs learning lab and curriculum in supplementary Jewish education. She now serves as Director of Congregational Learning at Congregation Beth Torah in Richardson, TX.

Robin Wald, Committee Member
Robin Wald is a Jewish educator at Bet Torah in Mount Kisco, NY where she teaches middle school children, teens and adults, leads an inter-generational program, three Rosh Hodesh groups and supervises the teen madrichim (teaching assistants) program. Robin applies her background in yoga and mindfulness to teaching Torah, ethics, theology and social action. She is passionate about learning from and with her students.
